PRAGMATIC SYSTEMS PRESENTS INFORMATIVE AND ENLIGHTENING CASE STUDY
ON DATA WAREHOUSING FOR THE COST CONSCIOUS TRAVEL INDUSTRY.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 28, 1997) - At the 1997 Fall Implementation Conference of the Data Warehousing Institute, Pragmatic System's Managing Director Sharyn Brotz presented a case study on November 18, 1997 entitled "Data WHERE HOW-sing--Dangers and Opportunities Associated with Thinking Big with a Small Dollar Budget." The presentation was based on an experience extending over one year at a major tour operations company.
The tour company was enchanted by the allure of data warehousing as are many in the travel industry, but they were not able to fund the entire engagement. Data Warehousing engagements cost much more in terms of initial and ongoing staff, equipment, software and time than most companies expect. While the benefits of data warehousing are substantial, the methods of determining the benefits and return on investment often result in more "intuitive" or soft benefits than the hard dollar benefits that are desired to fund these endeavors.
However, rather than dwelling on the decision to not continue the data warehouse, Sharyn provided a frank and forthright case study on the successful completion of a "data mart" that provided significant benefit for the company at 25% of the data warehouse estimated cost. The case study provided practical tips on how to accomplish some of the benefits of data warehousing at a fraction of the cost. The emphasis was on iterative development, leveraging existing systems, scalability, and providing visible benefits throughout the project.
As a result of the commitment to continue to provide value to the travel industry in the area of decision support and data "whatever" systems, Sharyn has teamed up with a few other associates and formed a new company dedicated to designing and delivering similar results to the travel industry.
